    What is counted as a device?

    We count all the devices that are managed from Cumulocity IoT including child devices. You configure them from Cumulocity IoT, upgrade their software, manage their availability and so forth.

    For example, assume you take a Raspberry Pi and connect a bunch of sensors to it, you would have one device regardless of the number of sensors. If you connect ten smart meters connected through a Wi-Fi gateway, and you manage both the Wi-Fi gateway and the smart meters from Cumulocity IoT, you would have eleven devices. The number of devices is displayed on the administration home page.

    What is counted as Inbound Data Transfer?

    Inbound Data Transfer refers to the total number of requests performed to transfer data into the Cumulocity IoT Platform. This includes sensor readings, alarms, events and operations are transferred between devices and the Cumulocity IoT platform using the REST and/or MQTT interfaces.

    A request could also originate from a custom microservice, website or any other client.

    What if I need more Inbound Data Transfers?

    Additional requests cost €3 per 100,000 API and are billed monthly.

    What is storage?

    Cumulocity IoT stores inventory, measurements, alarms, audit logs, events and operations. The total storage space required to store this data is used for billing. The current storage space is shown on the administration home page.

    For techies: The platform stores the raw data so typically it is smaller than the text sent over the normal REST APIs.

    What if I need more storage?

    Additional storage is €1 per 100 MB storage per month.

    Do you have an example?

    Certainly, here you go:

    Let’s assume you want to control your energy usage by connecting smart meters to Cumulocity IoT.

    The smart meter sends a JSON reading of 500 bytes every 5 minutes and data is kept for one year. This results in:

    • 8,640 inbound data transfers per month (30 days x 24 hours)
    • 64 MB data stored per year (8,640 transfers x 500 bytes x 12 months plus approximately 30% for Cumulocity IoT’s replicated high-performance data storage)

    For 100 meters multiply the results above by 100 to get (for the Small 100 bundle):

    • 864,000 inbound data transfers per month with 1,136,000 remaining in the allowance
    • 6.427 GB of data per year with 3.573 GB approximately remaining in the allowance

    So, the overall cost for 100 meters would be €500 per month for the Small 100 bundle.

    How does the trial work?

    When you sign up for the free trial, you will get immediate access to Cumulocity IoT. The trial runs for 30 days. After 30 days, you have the option to convert it into a paid subscription which will preserve all the data and configurations that you made so far.

    We will remind you by email a few days before the trial ends. You can cancel your trial or your subscription any time.

    If you do not choose to convert your trial, your tenant will be suspended, and the data will be removed after 7 days.

    How can I cancel my trial or my subscription?

    You can unsubscribe any time by mailing to  or using the website form.

    The service is charged in advance for the month and not refunded when using only a part of the month.

    If you choose to end your trial or subscription, your tenant will be suspended at the end of the period, and all your data will be removed from 7 days afterwards.

    How will I get billed?

    Your invoice will be sent at the beginning of each month by email, using the email address and billing information that you provided when signing up.

    For Standard Tenant users it will be calculated based on the subscribed bundle of devices, inbound data transfers and storage for the month.

    What payment options are there?

    What support do I get?

    All customers receive Business level support as outlined in our service level agreement. For Enterprise level support, contact us.

    How can I offer services to my enterprise customers through Cumulocity?

    There are three alternatives for you:

    1. You can simply have one Standard Tenant for each customer. This would give each customer a separate, dedicated space so that your customers would not be able to see each other's data.
    2. You can subscribe to the Enterprise Tenant and manage your customers entirely yourself.
    3. Alternatively, you can use the Role Based Access Control of the Standard Tenant to limit functionality and data access to your customer users. This may be suitable when you want to quick start a project.

    What is included in the Cumulocity IoT storage and why is this different from ‘pure’ cloud storage?

    Cumulocity IoT is more than a file sharing or archiving system. In contrast to normal file sharing services, Cumulocity IoT offers the following advantages:

    • The data that you store in Cumulocity IoT is stored on high performance storage systems (using SSD) with guaranteed I/O performance so that you can rapidly retrieve it. Compared to storage of data in hard disks, SSD storage with guaranteed performance is multiple times more expensive.
    • It is replicated so that your data is always available even in case some servers or disks fail. Data you write is immediately copied to another disk, where it is available in case the primary server or disk fails. This doubles the required storage space.
    • It is indexed, so that you can efficiently visualize your data. For example, measurement data is indexed in multiple dimensions to quickly access data of a certain time period or a certain device. These indexes take up additional storage space.
    • The data is backed up every day.

    This is illustrated in the image below. Typical storage services deal mainly with the "backup" and "archiving" part.

    Why is the storage space used greater than the mobile data traffic?

    Cumulocity IoT does more than store the data as is. Please see the answer to the previous question.

    The mechanism to send data to Cumulocity IoT is optimized to reduce data traffic as much as possible. The mechanism to store data in Cumulocity IoT is optimized to retrieve data as fast as possible and store the data as safely as possible.

    For example, "replication" means that all data is duplicated, so space grows by a factor of two.

    The amount of space used in Cumulocity IoT is the total space in use, not the space added since the previous month.
