Cumulocity accelerates autonomous industrial IoT as a founding member of EdgeX Foundry open source software project
Cumulocity, a Software AG company and the leading Internet of Things (IoT) software platform provider, today announced that it is a founding member of EdgeX Foundry, an open source software project, led by the Linux Foundation, to build a common open framework for Internet of Things (IoT) edge computing that accelerates enterprise and Industrial IoT.
Düsseldorf, Germany – IoT is delivering significant business value by improving efficiencies and increasing revenue through automation and analytics, but widespread fragmentation and the lack of a common IoT solution framework are hindering broad adoption and stalling market growth. The complexity of the current landscape and the wide variety of components creates paralysis. The EdgeX framework solves this by making it easy to quickly create IoT edge solutions that have the flexibility to adapt to changing business needs.
Success in Internet of Things is dependent on having a healthy ecosystem that can deliver interoperability and drive digital transformation. EdgeX Foundry is aligning market leaders around a common framework, which will drive IoT adoption and enable businesses to focus on developing innovative use cases that impact the bottom line. Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of The Linux Foundation
EdgeX Foundry is unifying the marketplace around a common open framework and building an ecosystem of companies offering interoperable plug-and-play components. Designed to run on any hardware or operating system with any application environment, the EdgeX framework can quickly and easily deliver interoperability between connected devices, applications, and services, across a wide range of use cases. Interoperability between community-developed software will be maintained through a certification program.
Today, interoperability is one of the main concerns in IoT deployments. The EdgeX Foundry project will be a huge step in unifying the diverse approaches taken across both the IT and Operational Technology (OT) industries. This is the first initiative in history, where so many IT and OT organisations are collaborating to create an open standard to make IoT edge hardware and software interoperable. Enterprises will have more choice when building their IoT solutions which will enable them to exploit the full potential of IoT faster and decrease both deployment and operational costs. Cumulocity’s open IoT software platform will fully support the project and provides our customers with the best mix of open source flexibility and carrier grade security, reliability and scalability.Bernd Gross, CEO of Cumulocity
